چکیده

We present here two epochs of Space VLBI Observations at 18 cm of the BL-Lac type object Mkn 501. Thanks to the high resolution of these new data we have found that the inner jet is centrally brightened at its beginning but becomes extended and limb brightened at ∼ 8 mas from the core. Moreover a comparison between the two epochs shows the presence of a possible proper motion with apparent velocity = 6.7c. VLBI data at 6 and 18 cm of the BL-Lac type object Mkn 421 are also presented. Observational data have been used to constrain the jet velocity and orientation.

We discuss an effect of the intergalactic absorption of the TeV γ-rays in time-averaged spectrum of Mkn 501 measured by the HEGRA collaboration. Analysis of the spectral behavior, variability time scale and relevant calculations of TeV γ-ray emission allow to conclude the presence of a noticeable absorption of the TeV γ-rays in the Mkn 501 energy spectrum.

The BL Lac object Mkn 501, one of the only three extragalactic sources (with Mkn 421 and 1ES 2344+514) so far detected at TeV energies, was observed with the BeppoSAX satellite on 7, 11, and 16 April 1997 during a phase of high activity at TeV energies, as monitored with the Whipple, HEGRA and CAT Cherenkov telescopes. Over the whole 0.1-200 keV range the spectrum was exceptionally hard (α ≤ 1,...

We use the new results of the HEGRA detector on the TeV γ–ray emission from MKN 501 to set upper limits on the energy density of the cosmic infrared background (CIRB). Contrary to previous interpretations of the γ–ray spectrum of MKN 421 as showing an intergalactic absorption cutoff at 5 TeV, the observed spectrum of MKN 501 extends beyond 10 TeV and appears to be unattenuated by γγ collisions ...

The recent HEGRA observations of the blazar Mkn 501 show strong curvature in the very high energy γ-ray spectrum. Applying the γ-ray opacity derived from an empirically based model of the intergalactic infrared background radiation field (IIRF), to these observations, we find that the intrinsic spectrum of this source is consistent with a power-law: dNγ/dE ∝ E −α with α = 2.00 ± 0.03 over the r...

We present the expected variability features in the context of the Synchro-Self-Compton (SSC) model of emission from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). We show that the homogeneous SSC model can describe well the observed mul-tiwavelength spectrum and variability of objects such as Mkn 421 and Mkn 501; however in order to explain the very fast flaring timescales occasionally observed from these obj...
